Beautiful Masurian history

The rich history of the Dylewo Hills and Wysoka Wieś stretches back to ancient times when it was inhabited by the Old Prussian pagan tribe known as the Sasins. The name and boundaries of the area began to take shape around the 13th century. In earlier Polish literature, the present-day name for the region, Western Masuria, was already in use. Today, traces of the presence of its former inhabitants can be found in the Wysoka Wieś area, finding them can be part of a holiday adventure.

Delve into the lesser-known tales of one of Masuria’s most captivating regions – the Dylewo Hills.
Where did the name Masuria come from?

One hypothesis suggests that the name Masuria originates from the Proto-Slavic word “masura,” denoting swamp, marsh, or bog, which characterizes the region. Another theory proposes that it derives from the Old Prussian word “masure,” signifying an island or land surrounded by water. Alternatively, it may reference people involved in collecting tar in the surrounding forest areas. Merge your holiday relaxation with exploring the historical traces of Masuria.
Multicultural heritage

In 2015, a Cultural Community Circle was established in Glaznoty, situated two kilometers from the Villas, to commemorate the rich cultural and historical diversity of the area. Symbolically representing not only the village but the entire Dylewo Hills region, it was constructed using stones transported by glaciers from Scandinavia. These glaciers originated from the homeland of the Goths, whose traces of settlement have been unearthed on the Dylewo Hills.

Pre-Slavic Goths

The Goths, a Germanic people, embarked on a journey from their homeland in Scandinavia, crossing the Baltic Sea aboard numerous ships. They arrived in the Lower Vistula region prior to the arrival of the Slavs, leaving behind remnants of their culture such as burial mounds and stone circles. These artifacts inspired the concept of the circle, symbolizing the creation of the world and erected in locations deemed sacred by the Goths. At the heart of the Cultural Community Circle stands a menhir adorned with intricate carvings depicting two “babas,” early medieval statues from Bratian and Prątnica.
