Skin microbiome: what is it?
The skin microbiome consists of all the microorganisms living on the skin’s surface: bacteria, fungi, mites, and viruses. When these organisms are balanced – in terms of quantity and species – they act as a protective barrier for the skin. However, when this balance is disrupted, symptoms such as dryness, irritation, flaking, or cracking may occur. Fortunately, the skin microbiome’s balance can be maintained with proper skincare.
