13 – 20.08.2016
50th Jan Kiepura Festival
The festival of the famous tenor is one of the oldest in Poland. The main objective of its initiator, Stefan Półchłopek, was to keep alive the memory of Jan Kiepura. Krynica seemed to be the perfect place for this, since in the 30s of the 20th century Jan Kiepura built here “Patria” – a large and modern hotel. This year’s festival is going to be a real feast, as on August 15 it is the 50th anniversary of Kiepura’s death. On that occasion, an outstanding concert “Aria for Krynica” dedicated to the memory of Jan Kiepura will be held. From August 13 for the next 8 days over 30 events will take place presenting different types of singing: concerts, performances, meetings, and singing workshop for youth. The festival’s stage will host over 400 artists from Poland and abroad, including several dozen opera singers and 8 orchestras, as well as a galaxy of stars like Artur Ruciński.
5 – 13.08.2016
71st Duszniki International Chopin Piano Festival
The oldest uninterrupted piano festival in the world, and also the oldest music festival in Poland takes place in the Chopin Manor in Duszniki-Zdrój, where in 1826 the 16-year-old Chopin played charity concerts. Each year, it is the place where world-class artists and both Chopin and piano music fans get together. The festival events are accompanied by Master Classes given by renowned teachers from all over the world. What music lovers hold high is the “Nocturne” – a night concert by candlelight and with a glass of wine, during which the audience – as in the 19th-century salon – listens to all pianists presenting their best interpretations, while the evening’s host (a musicologist, a lecturer, or an actor) discusses an issue related to the Polish musical genius. This year the inauguration recital will be given by Seong-Jin Cho – the winner of the 1st prize at the 17th International F. Chopin Piano Competition in 2015.
