The whole truth about Emma Stone

My God, what a beauty!
– This is what Woody Allen said after seeing her on the screen for the first time.

Nothing is what it seems

Stone was born and raised in Scottsdale, AZ. Interestingly, her bio often contains a small misstatement. Her grandfather was from a Swedish family that immigrated to the United States where he anglicized their surname from the Swedish “Sten” to “Stone”. The actress has also made a similar intervention. When at the beginning of her career Stone registered for the Screen Actors Guild, the name “Emily Stone” was already taken, so she changed her first name to Ridley. However, she wasn’t comfortable with this choice, “I didn’t react when people called my name,” so finally she dyed her blonde hair red and became “Emma”.

The power of persuasion

She could be the ambassador of PowerPoint which she used to make a slideshow presentation to convince her parents to let her pursue the goal of becoming an actress. The professional approach and deep conviction of the rightness of the actions of the then teenage Stone must have made an impression on them. Emma (still Emily at that time) was 15 when she moved to Los Angeles with her mother. There, to find a balance between education and castings, she switched to homeschooling.

Paradox

Stone has dealt with panic attacks since she was 7. It went so far that she had trouble leaving home or going to school. As she claims, acting was the remedy for her problems and gradually, with the help of therapy, she managed to free herself from the tormenting anxiety.

Early career

She made her television debut as Laurie Partridge on “The New Partridge Family” in 2004. She starred in “Superbad”, “Rocker”, “Malcolm in the Middle” and “Medium”. In 2009 she received nomination for the Teen Choice Award for her role of  Wichita in the zombie comedy film “Zombieland”.

Breakthrough

Much has changed with her starring role in “Easy A”, for which she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award. This was a breakthrough point in her career which begun to gain momentum. Stone starred in “Friends with Benefits”, “Crazy, Stupid, Love”, and Oscar-nominated drama “The Help”. She was Spiderman’s sweetheart and made an appearance in a gangster drama “Gangster Squad”.

Love story

She has met Andrew Garfield on the set of “The Amazing Spider-Man”. They have been America’s favorite show business couple for four years. They were reported to have broken up, but in a recent interview for TheHollywoodLife.com, when asked a fun question about who he would have with him on a deserted island, without hesitation, Andrew chose his ex. “Emma Stone. I love Emma. She’s all right. She can come,” he said.

What a beautiful dress!

During the press tour for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, Emma Stone appeared on the red carpets in North America, Asia, and Europe, and her style drew the attention of media. She was crowned 3rd best dressed woman of 2012 by People magazine.

A tale of making dreams come true

“La La Land”, a vivid musical set in the Hollywood’s golden age, received 7 Golden Globes, 11 nominations at the 70th British Academy Film Awards and at the Venice Film Festival wowed the critics so much that Emma Stone won the main award. Finally, the film became the biggest winner at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony.

The film has been the favorite from the very beginning, it received 14 nominations and at the end won six statuettes. For Stone, this musical became the springboard to winning the award for Best Actress. According to the Hollywood Reporter magazine, originally, Emma Watson and Miles Teller were up for the leads. Watson dropped out to play the lead in the “Beauty and the Beast”. Ryan Gosling was offered the role of the Beast, but turned it down to appear in “La La Land”.

Behind the scenes

The actress shared her experiences in an interview for The Rolling Stone, referring to a very current topic of unequal treatment of women in Hollywood. “There are times in the past, making a movie, when I've been told that I’m hindering the process by bringing up an opinion or an idea,” she says, “There have been times when I've improvised, they've laughed at my joke and then given it to my male co-star,” she adds. “Or it’s been me saying, ‘I really don't think this line is gonna work’, and being told, ‘Just say it, just say it, if it doesn't work we’ll cut it out’—and they didn’t cut it out, and it really didn’t work!’” she says.

Gossip

It was recently confirmed that she will play Cruella de Vil in the re-make of “101 Dalmatians”. The producers wanted her to put on a few pounds, but Stone refused to, reminding them about the existence of push up bras and butt pads. Well, with an Oscar in your hands you just can’t say yes to anything, right?
